These brown leather covers that have little gilt stamped flowers in each of the four corners of the cover connected by a gilt stamped triple-line border. The edges of the covers and the square (area of the cover visible around the textblock) are gilt stamped with abstract designs. The spine has been repaired with the new leather a lighter brown than the covers, and gilt stamped to match as much as possible the existing gilting. The edges of the textblock are coated in gold (a.e.g.).
The endpapers are a gray stone marbling pattern surrounded by red, black, yellow, blue, and white veining with smaller white stones scattered over the top of the larger stones and veining.
The paper is made of old rags and some of the original fibers are still visible. The type has left deep impressions in the paper which can be felt with a fingertip.
___________________________________________
Quintus Horatius Flaccus was born of a freedman and rose to the rank of Tribunus Militum under Brutus in the eastern regions of the Roman Empire after studying in Greece for several years. When the rebellion against Octavian/Augustus failed, Horace returned to Rome, was granted amesty and given a minor government position that enabled him to come to the notice of influencial men of letters. He published his first work after this occurance in 35BC and his poetry included forms common to Greek archaic form or were satires.
Horace lived from 65BC to 8BC.
