Description
[All the books in this set match, but only volume 7 is photographed]:
These marbled leather covers sport a faint black paint filled stamped line around the edge of the covers. The second and third compartments on the spine have red leather inserts with an abbreviated title and volume number gilt stamped onto the inserts, surrounded by gilt borders. The other compartments, between the raised bands, are a flower-like design with borders. Very delicately stamped into the narrow edges of the cover is line-and-dot pattern.
Sewn into the headband is an orange ribbon to be used as a bookmark that has turned brown, while the headband and the tailband are two colors, blue and white.
The endpapers are a comb marbling design in red, blue, yellow, and green on white, while the stone marbling on the edges of the textblock are blue, black, yellow, and red.
The paper is made of old rags with raised capitals and type that bites into the paper leaving a slight indentation for the fingertips to feel.
The solo vignette on the title page looks like a wood block engraving.

Roger de Bussy-Rabutin bought his commission as a Lieutenant-Colonel General of light cavalry, the title prominently displayed on the title page of this book. He did serve in the military for both the government and the rebels, albeit, not simultaneously, but his true rank was much lower. He was a nobleman, but his writings were scandalous and for the entertainment of his peers. This seven volume set are copies of his letters.
Rabutin lived from 1618-1693.
