Description
Unadorned smooth brown leather covers that have a cracked pattern that partially obscures the marbling of the covers. The spine has a red leather insert with the title gilt stamped on it in the second compartment down, while the third compartment does not have a leather insert so the volume information appears is stamped onto the spine. The rest of the compartments have a centerpiece-corners motif with an abstract gilt pattern on the raised bands as well as the edges of the covers.
The edges of the textblock were painted red. The paper is made of old rags and the type has left slight indentations in the paper. A green and white ribbon is sewn into the headband to serve as a bookmark; someone put a knot in the ribbon.
The vignette on the title page and the illustrations or vignettes scattered throughout the text appear to be wood engravings.

Claude Fleury was a French Cistercian abbott and priest who studied and practiced law before taking holy orders. He was a pupil of Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet whose Discours sur l'Histoire Universelle is included in this display.
This book is part of his 20 volume set on the history of the Catholic Church to 1414; however, as an advocate of the Gallicanism heresy, his works were banned and included in the Catholic Church's Index of Forbidden Books.
Fleury lived from 1640-1723.
