IN OUR FATHER'S HOUSE: SAINT PETER'S AND THE VATICAN | BISHOP JOHN SMIT D.D. AND HOUGH O'FLAHERTY D.D. | VATICAN CITY: VATICAN POLYGLOT PRESS | 1940 | 4TH EDITION
The front cover of this volume is a vibrant red color with white text and a white silhouette of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. The spine and back cover are white and the back is adorned only with a red ink image of the Papal flag. The covers are made of thin white cardboard covered with paper.
Inside are photographic facsimiles of various attractions in Vatican City. These photographs were reproduced on a lithographic machine. Their aesthetic quality demonstrates beauty rather than any particular art style. The endpapers are blue on blue construction paper adding a surprise element to the overall color scheme. Perhaps this was meant to intentionally encourage the reader to focus on the book’s contents. There is a frontispiece of a 13th century icon of Christian saints Peter and Paul. The title page features an interesting combination of script and black text fonts.
This book is one of 3,000 volumes donated by Mrs. Marifrances Engelhardt after Hurricane Matthew (2016) flooded her home. About 240 books are in Special Collections. During WWII she served in Spain in the diplomatic corps and married a well-known foreign correspondent, through whom she met Ernest Hemingway and Orson Wells. Sometime after her second marriage she settled in St. Augustine. When shown a book from her collection, despite her advanced years, she remembered who in her family owned it or gave it to her, and whether or not she enjoyed reading it. Mrs. Engelhardt died on April 18, 2017.
