Description

[All three volumes match]:
These volumes are half-bound royal blue leather under marbled paper covers. There is a blind-stamped line on the leather where they adjoin with the paper. There is additional blind stamped on the front and back covers in the form of a triangle accenting the ends of the raised bands that end with acorns. On the spine the title is gilt stamped in the second compartment, while the author and volume number are gilt stamped in the third compartment. The marbled paper is a stone pattern in three shades of blue and white; gilt veining was hand-painted over the top of the marbling.
The top edge of the textblock has been painted with gold leaf. The paper is made of wood pulp paper. The marbling of the endpapers match the marbling of the covers. The paper has false chain and laid lines to imitate cotton rag paper.
The vignettes and raised capitals look like wood block engravings, while the frontispiece looks like a copper-plate engraving of the stipple style.
___________________________________________
John, Lord Hervey was an English politician who was a friend and advisor to Queen Charlotte whose husband was the topic of these memoirs. He started his political career in the House of Commons, but when his elder-half-brother died, he gained the title of Baron of Ickworth and moved up into the House of Lords. This work was first published in 1848, but it was a sanitized version, as is this edition due to Hervey's no-holds-barred approach to writing.
Hervey lived from 1696-1743.
