THE MARY FRANCES STORYBOOK | EDWIN JOHN PRITTIE, AND JANE EAYRE FRYER ILLUS. | PHILEDELPHIA: THE JOHN C. WINSTON CO. | 1921
This volume sports blue cloth covers with a blind stamped border surrounding a paper onlay on the front cover. The title and author are part of the lovely illustration, but separated from the rest by a banner. The text is gilt stamped on the spine. The endpapers also portray beautifully illustrated representations of a ship on the sea and a castle on an island - presumably these relate to one of the stories in the book. This line art is a simple way of portraying texture and detail. Interestingly, illustrated raised capitals and full-page illustrations can be found throughout the text, illustrating the book’s selected stories. The colors used in the illustrations as well as for the raised capitals give the contents a very specific color palate of black, gray, and shades of orange. These illustrations are very interesting because they look like steel-plate engravings that then went through a lithographic machine with just the color orange. There are also three lithographic plates on glossy paper that offer more detailed illustrations with a wider range of colors. During the 1920s it was common for publishers to limit the number of colors printed in their books in order to save money.
The Mary Frances Story Book is one of 3,000 volumes donated by Mrs. Marifrances Engelhardt after Hurricane Matthew (2016) flooded her home. About 240 books are in Special Collections. During WWII she served in Spain in the diplomatic corps and married a well-known foreign correspondent, through whom she met Ernest Hemingway and Orson Wells. Sometime after her second marriage she settled in St. Augustine. When shown a book from her collection, despite her advanced years, she remembered who in her family owned it or gave it to her, and whether or not she enjoyed reading it. Mrs. Engelhardt died on April 18, 2017.
