Description

The covers of this book are a quarter binding of white coated cloth to look like leather under white diaper-grained cloth that was lithographed with flowers in pink, blue, and green with gilt outline. The leather-like portion of the covers was stamped on the front cover and filled with gilt and is an intertwining lily pad design with the title in gilt near the top. The spine has been gilt stamped with a line of intertwining raspberry's with the title gilt stamped near the top and the publisher's name near the bottom.
The paper is wood pulp despite the strongly visible chain and laid lines imitating hand-made rag paper. The frontispiece, title page, and plates are on glossy paper. The frontispiece and the title page have borders in copper. The frontispiece and the plates, including the one that looks like a photograph, are relief-halftone lithography prints.
___________________________________________
Laurence Housman was the younger brother of English poet A.E. Housman and was initially trained in art. He turned to writing around the turn-of-the-20th century, but some of his early work was censored and he wrote mostly for the theatre. It is thought that he anonymously published this volume.
Housman lived from 1865-1959.
