Transcription of event description:
ONE THOUSAND GEMS OF GENIUS IN POETRY AND ART | FREDERICK SAUNDERS AND M.K. DAVIS | INDIANAPOLIS: WARD PUBLISHING CO. | 1894 | 3RD EDITION
This volume features sea foam green cloth covers, heavily decorated with brown, green, gold, and silver in the design of a stamped woman with a lyre, a box of jewels, a Greek tragedy mask, and a painting easel. The back is plain. The spine features illustrations of two cherubs with a torch and symbols beneath a small gilt portrait of William Shakespeare surrounded by laurel leaves. Throughout this cover design, there are clear references to classical imagery. This volume features abstract composition, organic borders instead of linear ones, and a title on various lines. The title font is also unique and features a shadowed appearance. This cover art also emphasizes organic borders instead of linear ones.
Inside the book there are numerous steel-plate engraved illustrations portraying natural settings, portraits of the authors, and scenes from the poems. Also, some of the illustrations are facsimiles intended to present the original form of the poem transcribed in the text. The poems begin with raised capitals and the text is printed in two columns. When flipping through, please be careful as the front cover has come completely loose.
