Transcription of event description:
THE POETICAL WORKS OF CHARLES G. HALPINE | CHARLES G. HALPINE (MILES O'RILEY) | NEW YORK: HARPER & BROTHERS | 1869
The green cloth binding on this volume coordinates well with its organic motif. On the cover there is a blind stamped border surrounding a gilt stamped border. The central portion of the covers are deeply stamped with a geometrical design evocative of Islamic influence. The focal point is the handwritten facsimile signature of Mr. Halpine in gold leaf. This humanizing touch certainly prepares the audience for the personal concepts seen within the book. The stamping is repeated on the back cover of the book with the addition of a stamped printer/publisher’s device (HB and hands).
Looking at the spine from the top down, this volume has heavy gilt florals surrounding a version of the title, an angel sitting inside a Celtic harp with broken strings, the author’s name, and lastly a cowboy kneeling in prayer surrounded by a choir of angels playing harps. There is a narrow double line, gilt border framing the spine. As seen from books of previous centuries the bulk of decoration is focused on the spine which is the most visible part of the book when shelved.
This book is one of the curator’s favorite books in Special Collections because it is so evocative of mid-19th century books. It is a shame that at some point a thoughtless person took a white pen and wrote two different dates across the front cover.
The edges of the cover are intentionally cut at an angle to create bevelled edges. There is a steel-plate engraved frontispiece featuring a portrait of the author, protected by tissue paper whose purpose is evident by the fact that it has caught some bleeding ink.
