Transcription of event description:
THE LAST CHRONICLE OF BARSET | ANTHONY TROLLOPE | NEW YORK: HARPER AND BROTHERS, PUBLISHERS | 1867 | 1ST AMERICAN ED.
One glance at the exterior of this book may leave the viewer wondering, why it is included in an event called “Beautiful Books.” Its binding is simple green pebble-grain cloth with embossed borders and a minimal gilt stamping on the spine. One look inside at the illustrations, however, will quickly change your mind.
Close examination of this book’s textblock reveals foxing, dirt stains, and black finger smudges throughout. It is important to treat your books (especially historically and monetarily valuable ones) with care!
Fairly typical for the 19th century, the text is in double columns. The illustrations are probably steel etched. There was considerable time and detail put into the diligent rendering of shape, texture and shading through the use of thin lines. The illustrations also help date this novel as a contemporary setting to the mid-1860s, based on the clothing and activities portrayed. Overall, these illustrations demonstrate a typical style of what was used for generations before the invention of the color printer.
