ABREGE DE L’HISTOIRE ANCIENNE DE MONSIEUR ROLLIN | MR. L’ABBE TAILHIE | NEUCHATEL: DE L’IMPRIMERIE DE SAMUEL FAUCHE, LIBRAIRE DU ROI | 1776
Like the book from Belgium, this - the only Swiss printed book in the collection - is covered with marbled leather, but unlike Histoire Ecclesiastique, this one is in excellent condition. Marbled leather was only produced in the 18th and early 19th centuries. In our two examples, the binder decided to highlight the marbling by leaving the covers otherwise unadorned, except for the spines. It is hard to see from this angle, but gilt lines on the diagonal are stamped into the tail imitating the line of stitching that holds the bottom of the leaves together. The two leather inserts on the spine (red and black) for the title and author are so well attached as to appear painted on under the gilt decoration. It is hard to see, but a gilt line has been tooled along the edges of the covers. Notice how the back cover is not perfectly rectangular; the front back edge (the square) is nearly flush with the top of the textblock! The edges of the book are painted red and the endpapers are a lovely combed marbled paper. Within the textblock it is possible to see the fibers in the paper, the broken type font (caused by worn out metal printing type), lovely cooper plate vignettes at the beginning and end of chapters, and small raised capitals.
