This book was covered in silk fabric patterned on the Fraser tartan as marked on the inside back cover. The fabric is disintegrating and is just threads now. There was gilt stamping for the title on the front and a label on the spine, but these are mostly gone due to the condition.
The endpapers are gray circles over gray circles of mass-produced paper. The paper is made of wood pulp.
The frontispiece is of Mary, Queen of Scots. There is one contemporary photograph (1920s) and three black and white reproductions of paintings as plates scattered throughout the book that are offset lithographs.
The edges of the textblock were dyed red.

Sir Walter Scott is famous for his historical novels, usually set in Scotland, but his most widely read book today, Ivanhoe, is set in Medieval England at the time of King Richard the Lionheart. Scott is considered the father of the historical novel.
Although Scott is known for his historial research for his novels, he was not always accurate, and in the case of the much-maligned Mary, Queen of Scot, his literary license was passed off as history and purpetuated inaccurate information through generations.
Scott lived from 1771-1832.
