THE LIFE AND ACTS OF DON ALONZO ENRIQUEZ DE GUZMAN | CLEMENTS R. MARKHAM | LONDON: PRINTED FOR THE HAKLUYT SOCIETY | 1862
Visually appealing, these covers have a plain blind stamped border and centerpiece - in this case a two-masted ship. The details of the stamp for this ship is just amazing and worthy of a close look. The plain borders and corner borders are embossed. The back matches the front but the ship does not have gold leaf. The fabric pattern is known as diaper grain, which first appeared as a book cloth pattern in the 1830s.
This is a mid-19th century facsimile of a 16th century account of a Spanish traveler through Spain, Portugal, Italy, Sicily, Flanders, Germany, the Balearic Islands (which includes Minorca, where many St. Augustine Minorcans came from), and finally Peru. Sadly, the editors and publishers of this Hakluyt Society book neglected to include maps. The Hakluyt Society was founded in 1840s England for gentlemen interested in reading about discoveries, explorations, and explorers. They republished many accounts from earlier centuries. This Society still exists and publishes today.
