Text
ANGE PITOU AND THE VICONTE DE BRAGELONNE | ALEXANDRE DUMAS | BOSTON: LITTLE, BROWN, AND CO. | 1899
Little, Brown & Co. republished all the works of Alexandre Dumas in this rather busy and all-over grape and wheat pattern. Because of how busy this pattern is, it is hard to focus on the details that are the design. The title, author, volume number (for the title), series title (Dumas wrote his works in series), and publisher’s name are found on the spine while the front and back covers are left sans words. The top edge is painted with gold leaf while the fore-edge of the book is left uncut – considered beautiful, or at least appealing to some. The steel-plate illustrations inside are protected by tissues, which amusingly enough have deteriorated more rapidly than either the illustrations they are protecting, or the paper the text is printed on. Most of Dumas’s historical novels take place in the 17th and 18th centuries in France. Dumas’ best-known work is The Three Musketeers. The overwhelming nature of the cover design imitates the popular cover design in France during the centuries when Dumas works are set – considered the golden years of French binding. Although very attractive when viewed in their entirety, the originals and these imitations are hard on the eyes when trying to decipher specific elements.
