Description
[We have 25 volumes in a matching set published over 10 years organized by series: Marie Antoinette, D'Artagnan, and Valois.]
The covers of the books in this set are maroon calico-grain cloth covers that are plain on the back and heavily gilted in an early Renaissance style of intertwining scrolls and florals with what looks like grape clusters. The spine matches, but there are blank areas for the title, the volume number, a background gilt-filled area with the series title coming through in cloth, and the publisher's name is printed at the bottom.
The endpapers are plain black coated paper. The paper is made of wood pulp. The top of the textblock has been painted with gold leaf while the foredge and bottom are deckled (uncut).
The frontispiece, the plates, and the title page are on glossy paper. The frontispiece looks like a drypoint copper etching while the other plates look like relief lithographs. The frontispiece merited two tissues (thin piece of paper to protect the illustration and catch any off-bleeding), while the plates only have one tissue. The tissues have a caption printed in red on them. The illustrations have been signed by the artist, E. Van Muyden.
