Description

This is a calico-textured mustard cloth covered book with two narrow stamped green painted lines around the front cover. The back cover is plain. Within this border is a thicker border of intertwined green vines and leaves with six complete red poppies and two partial poppies. This frames a version of the title in gilt. The spine is a version of the front cover, but because it has sun-tanned the gilting of the partial title and the publisher's name is hard to see.
The paper is made of wood pulp with darkening around the edges well into the margins and almost to the text. The frontispiece and the title page are on glossy paper, but the frontispiece is more glossy. The bust of Longfellow and the border of the title page look like wood engravings. There is a heavily darkened tissue (thin piece of paper to protect a plate) between the frontispiece and the title page.
