Text
AUCASSIN AND NICOLETE | ANDREW LANG | EAST AURORA, NY: ROYCROFTER'S SHOP | 1899
This beautiful book features dark chocolate brown leather covers with a flower and heart border in gilt and red. The design is on both the front and back covers; however, the spine is plain. The endpapers are a partial doublure. A full doublure is when the endpapers are leather matching the covers, but these are only a frame covering watered red silk. The frame is decorated with gilt leaves and red hearts same as on the covers. The top edge is gilt while the other two edges are deckled. The reason the spine is plain is because this book has been rebacked, meaning the spine has been replaced by a book conservator.
The title page features a blank frame outlining an angel wing design. The publisher’s mark is printed in red ink. The text of this book is decorative, with various colors used throughout. Before the book starts, there is a poem about Aucassin and Nicolete that has been printed in green type. There are raised capitals throughout the book, with each capital shaded in a different color. There are also headpieces printed in bright red at the beginning of each section. The most unusual feature of the interior of this book is the large hand-drawn raised capital. This raised capital has been drawn in yellow and green pen, and appears to have been added as an afterthought or to fill a space improperly inked when the book was printed. You can find this peculiar raised capital on page 24.
English Professor Emeritus, Dr. Andrew “Drew” Dillon, who taught at Flagler for several decades, donated this book just over a year before his death in 2015. He is remembered fondly by all who knew him.
