Description

[This is a rebacked book. Our donor, Dr. Dillon, had repair work done on other books; therefore, it is likely that the rebacking job was ordered and paid for by him. The new spine leather was carefully glued under the existing leather.]
The leather covers of this book are brown and are stamped with a narrow gilt line around the frame/border of gilt stamped daisy-like flowers. Tucked into the gilt frame are ten gilt outlined red onlay hearts in the four corners and in the four cardinal directions. One of the onlays on the back cover is gone.
The paper is handmade wood-pulp paper with a deckled edge (uncut). One of the images included with this record shows the printer's mark waterstamped on a blank page. The top edge of the textblock is cut and covered with gold leaf.
The endpapers are a doublure with red water silk. A doublure is a frame on the inside of the covers that match the exterior and have a blank area in the middle of the pastedown side of the endpaper that is either paper or silk.
The border on the title page, vignettes, and the raised capitals look like wood block engravings, but the color and gilt was added by hand. This book includes the most impressive raised capital in the collection.
_______________________________________
This sung/poem/narrative was written in the 13th century by an unknown minstrel.
Andrew Lang was a Scottish translator of fairy tales by the Grimm's Brothers. However, he did other translations into English as well, from Greek to German to French. What is forgotten is that Lang wrote his own poetry and tales.
Lang lived from 1844-1912.
