Text
LUCILE | OWEN MEREDITH | NEW YORK: HURST & CO. | 1880s
This volume has royal blue cloth covers with bevelled edges. The back cover is plain, while the front cover and spine are highly ornate. The front cover features a double line black border surrounding a black floral scrolled headpiece. In the upper three-quarters of the front cover, there are flowers and dots stamped in black and gold. The gilt dots are a design known as semé, where a small repeating pattern fills otherwise blank space behind a larger design; in this case flowers, the wreath, and faux title label. The title is in the center of the design on a gilt background with a floral pattern. The spine has lines and dots stamped in gilt, with a gold and black floral and scroll headpiece. As on the front cover, a simulated title label is gilt stamped with the blue cloth showing through for the title and some leaves. Underneath that, there is a gilt box with torches crossed behind a wreath, and a Pegasus. The name of the publisher was created using the same technique as for the title. All of the edges are A.E.G. The ornate floral design of Lucile is typical of the 1870s and 1880s, and a similar design is on Blind Agnese.
After admiring the exterior of Lucile, the interior seems plain. The endpapers are a plain chocolate brown. The frontispiece is a steel-plate engraving of a man sitting in a chair reading while a younger man watches. The title page is plain, except for a border in red ink, which is on every subsequent page. There are also line drawing illustrations on plates throughout.
