Text
MARONIS CARMINA OMNIA | VIRGIL, JOANNIS BOND, FATHER DUBNER | PARISSII: EX TYPOGRAPHIA FIRMINORUM DIDOT
This book was intended for French scholars schooled in the Latin language so they could read the original Virgil rather than in translation. The title, Carmina Omnia, translates to All Songs, meaning that these are all the songs of Virgil, with commentary by Jonas Bond, and editing by Father Dubner.
This book has beautiful dark red leather covers (looks like imitation goatskin) with a double line blind stamping near the edges on both the front and back covers. The spine features raised bands framed by blind stamped double lines. The author, editor, and title are stamped on the spine in gold. All edges are gilt (A.E.G.), and there is a beautiful floral scroll design in the square. This design continues onto the edges of the covers. The endpapers are a burgundy, mustard, navy, and cream comb marbling pattern.
The title page is decorative, and features many classical Roman elements, including Romulus and Remus suckling the wolf in the center, a Romanesque bust on what appears to be a coin at the top, and a frieze featuring Roman soldiers in battle at the bottom. At the beginning of each section, there are Romanesque illustrations, usually of people. All the text is surrounded by a red border, with one block for content, and another for commentary. The title and the vignettes are all steel-plate engravings.
English Professor Emeritus, Dr. Andrew “Drew” Dillon, who taught at Flagler for several decades, donated this book just over a year before his death in 2015. He is remembered fondly by all who knew him.
