Description

This book is covred in red leather that look like goatskin of the "Russian" variety, but true Russian-imitation goatskin has a smell, and this book does not. Additionally, the pattern looks regular whereas true Russian does not. There are two narrow blind stamped lines all around the covers. The spine is plain but with blind stamped lines with two lines both above and below each raised band. The headcap and tailcap partially roll over the head and tail bands which are threads of two colors, yellow and maroon. The author's last name, commentator's last name, and first part of the title are gilt stamped on the spine with a rule between the title and commentator's name.
The marbled endpapers are a comb pattern in red, blue, yellow, and white. The edges of the textblock are covered in gold leaf.
Inside, the paper looks and smells like wood-pulp paper. Each page has a red-rule border around it, harkening back several centuries when this occurred more often.
The raised capitals are in the square section set off by more red ruling at the beginning of sections. The printing of the text of Virgil's story, as opposed to the commentary, is very small and tightly packed. The vignettes are located at the beginning of each chapter and could be either a copper plate or a steel plate engraving.
