Description

Dark brown leather covers with the only decoration being on the spine. This book was treated at one time with a leather treatment product to try and slow the rate of deterioration, and it makes seeing the decoration difficult. There are raised bands, there is a red and tan insert in the second and third compartments down while the other compartments have stamping, but whether it was gold-filled or blind-stamped cannot be determined.
The endpapers are only left as pastedowns (inside of the cover), and these are a combed stone pattern in red, white, and blue. The edges of the textblock were dipped into red dye.
The paper is made of old rags, the type bit into the paper most noticeably on the title page. The frontispiece, plates, and the vignettes look like they may be copper-plate engravings.
___________________________________________
Roger de Bussy-Rabutin bought his commission as a Lieutenant-Colonel General of light cavalry. He did serve in the military for both the government and the rebels, albeit, not simultaneously, but his true rank was much lower. He was a nobleman, but his writings were scandalous and for the entertainment of his peers. This book is a prime example of scandalous writing and was one of his more sensational books.
Rabutin lived from 1618-1693.
