Description
This book has dark brown on medium brown marbled leather covers with cracking over the darker areas. There is a blind-stamped line border along the edge of the covers. Around the cover edges is a delicate line design gilt stamped, but the square (area of the cover extending beyond the textblock) is plain. On the spine, the raised bands are gilt stamped with the same line as on the cover edges. There is a red leather insert in the second compartment with an abbreviated title gilt stamped and bordered by a gilt line border. The third compartment has the volume information stamped in it, but it is wrong, this is volume 1, not 8. The other compartments have a heavy centerpiece-four corner pattern of a flower and fans. The extra spaces in the top and bottom compartments have an extra heavy flower border added.
The edges of the textblock were dipped in red dye. The endpapers are a snail marbling pattern, also called French curl, popular at the time of this book's production. The colors of the marbling are: blue, white, pink, and orange. Sewn into the headcap is a blue ribbon to use as a bookmark.
The paper is made of old rags. The frontispiece, maps, and vignettes were engraved on a copper-plate. There are side-notes in the margins of the text.
