Description
At the time of production the leather used for these covers were decorated with acid on a brush to create the streaky look. Otherwise a narrow gilt-stamped border is all the decoration there is to the covers. On the edges of the covers is a line and dot blind-stamped design that continues into the square area (the visible part of the covers extending beyond the textblock). On the spine, two compartments have either a tan or black leather insert upon which are gilt stamped either part of the title or the volume number. The other compartments are blind stamped with a flower within an oval within line borders. Extra lines are blind stamped in the largest compartment at the bottom.
The edges of the textblock were dipped in the marbling solution that was also used for the endpapers. The design is a curl pattern in red, black, blue, yellow, and white. Based on the smell and darkening, the paper is wood pulp.
Fragments of poems in other languages are included.

Thomas Warton (the younger) was Poet Laureate of England from 1785-1790. He came from a poetical family following in the footsteps of his father and joined in the "family business" by a brother. However, his historical recognition is based on this three volume set and his work as a literary historian. He did not live to complete volume three.
Warton lived from 1728-1790.
Richard Price was a man of varied interests but worked as an Unitarian preacher while also pursuing and writing about such diverse topics as politics, mathematics, philosophy, and literature.
Price lived from 1723-1791.
