Description

This half-bound book of tan leather under moiré marbled covers has gilt stamping in the compartments between the raised bands on the spine. The gilt pattern is a dotted line square that surrounds a dotted line to form a star. The tops of the raised bands are gilt with a scroll pattern, and there is a different scroll pattern in the compartments surrounding the raised bands. Two compartments have the title and volume information gilt stamped into them. Moiré marbling is a pattern created by the paper being shook back and forth over the marbling solution to create ripples or waves.
The endpapers are plain tan-gray construction paper with a bookplate for William Frederick Prentice. Although these volumes do not have ownership stamps from the Upchurch family, most of the other Prentice books in the collection do.
The paper is made of wood pulp based on the smell and darkening pattern. The plates are a thicker paper. There are no visible plate marks. Most of the plates are protected by a thin blue piece of paper called a tissue (thin piece of paper to protect plates and catch any off-bleeding of the ink).
The close-up image included in this record is of Lyme Hall in Cheshire, which should look familiar to fans of the 1995 BBC Miniseries, Pride and Prejudice as the location of Darcy's Pemberley.

Neale lived from 1780-1847.
