FLORIDA: THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT | NEVIN O. WINTER | BOSTON: THE PAGE COMPANY | 1918 | 1ST EDITION
This eye-catching volume is bound in a heavy green cloth featuring Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau style decoration in gold, green, yellow, white, and blue. The decoration features imagery of local flora and fauna, such as, alligators, oranges, palm trees, pineapples, magnolias, blades of seagrass, birds, and butterflies. The curators are particularly fond of the alligator near the bottom of the front cover. The style used to render him is an interesting representation of the stylization popular in art in the early 20th century. The use of scenery inside the centerpiece on the front cover is the focal point emphasizing a lighthouse on the beach, a palm tree, and an orange grove. This attention to detail and multiple references to the characteristic features of Florida demonstrates the beauty found in Florida’s natural landscapes. The ring-shaped damage near the top of the front cover is evidence that someone once used this book as a coaster.
The front endpapers feature palm trees on either side of a roadway, while the back endpapers depict palm trees on an island. Both of these designs are silhouettes – a popular artistic technique of this time-period. The frontispiece depicts a lovely sunrise in an iconic Everglades setting, almost resembling a postcard. Multiple images throughout the book (chalk-style lithograph drawings and photographs) are on glossy paper. In keeping with this book being a perfect example of book design in the early 20th century, the edges are uncut. This volume may contain an inaccurate history of Florida, but this was the opinion of the time, and serves as an interesting example of the wonder with which Florida has always been regarded.
