Description

This book has blue calico-textured cloth covers over thick boards that have been sharply beveled. The back is otherwise plain with the stamping limited to the front cover and spine. The deep stamping as well as some of the flat areas have been painted in either black or with gold. The design is a two-tone border around the edge, surrounding an Egyptian-inspired design of mountains, sunrise, flowers, grasses, lily-pads, Ibises, and an Egyptian bust. The raised capitals of the title are also two-tone and a combination of geometric and floral designs. The spine mimics the front, but with many horizontal lines around the panel for the title, and a simplified version of the front cover design. The publisher's name is gilted at the bottom. This book shows some influence of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
The edges of the textblock were covered with gold leaf. The endpapers are a brown geometric repeating pattern on white that appears to be mass-produced. The paper is made of wood pulp.
The illustrations are a combination of plates and vignettes throughout the book. While the vignettes, including the raised capitals, look like steel-plate engravings, some of the plates look either steel or wood engravings.
