LAUREL LEAVES: ORIGINAL POEMS, STORIES, AND ESSAYS | WILLIAM FEARING GILL, ED. | CHICAGO: BELFORD, CLARKE, AND CO. | 1888
In a display highlighting beauty, it is hard to point to one book and say, “That is a beautiful book,” but we make so bold as to point to this one and say, “This is one of the most beautiful books in Special Collections.” Why? It has everything! The cover is both embossed and stamped, it has a deep blue cover against which the black paint and gold leaf can pop, classical elements, Eastlake style details, natural elements, “modern” elements, bevelled edges, A.E.G., fun typography, raised capitals, beautiful internal lay-out, attractive decorative endpapers, and lovely illustrations. These illustrations include the hallmarks of steel-plate engravings, especially the plate on p. 75 where both crosshatching for shadowing, and narrowed lines through curves are visible through the Lightscope.
Please do not drool on this book as you flip through! Oh, and please support the front cover, it is starting to make cracking noises when opened.
