SARAH FAITH ANDERSON: HER BOOK | ELVIRA GARNER | NEW YORK: L. JULIAN MESSNER, INC. | 1939 | 1ST EDITION
The lovely dust jacket on this volume coordinates beautifully with the simple cover which it hides. In the early 19th century, the use of dust jackets was growing increasingly popular as a means of visually appealing to shoppers and not just the original purpose of protecting the book from shelf-wear before being sold. The dust jacket, and cover feature similarly styled text, but the illustrations differ. On the dust jacket red, green, blue, yellow, gray, and pink are utilized in a stylized representation of one of the main characters. The typography on the dust jacket is detailed and clearly illustrates an embroidered/cross-stitched title. The stamped text on the brown linen-look cloth covers allows for fewer fine details. Still, there is a duo-chromatic color scheme and adorable needle, thread, and thimble image. Fun fact: this fictional diary takes place in St. Augustine!
The numerous pastel-toned lithographic illustrations have the appearance of loose ink outlines and watercolor/marker-esque coloration – a 1930s artist conceptualization of what a child might draw. The images accent the text beautifully and serve the same function as picture books of the later 20th to 21st centuries. The illustrations immerse the viewer in the fun-loving life and emotions of Sarah and her great-granddaughter. On the marked page, you may recognize the familiar structure of the Castillo de San Marcos. On a later page, there is also the local entrance to the “Fountain of Youth Park.”
Sarah Faith Anderson is part of the St. Augustine Fiction Collection purchased in April of 2015.
