WORLD FAMOUS WOMEN | FRANK B. GOODRICH | CINCINNATI: WILLIAM H. MOOR, SONS & CO. | 1871
This eye-catching volume includes brown cloth binding over heavy boards textured to look like goatskin leather. The covers of this volume also have bevelled edges, which adds to the overall effect of depth. The front and back covers are deeply embossed using a geometric pattern to draw the viewer’s eye to the center. The centerpiece features a stamped symmetrical design that is gilt stamped on the front cover and blind stamped on the back cover. The centerpiece is busy and complex, serving as a very clear focal point. The spine has suffered significant wear and sun damage; thus, the colors have faded. But the blind stamped ridges on the spine are a harkening back to when books were sewn together on chords. Unlike a true sewn book though these false bands that are not evenly spaced. Also, the edges of the textblock are A.E.G. The spine of this book features false head and tail bands in a striped fabric; commonly employed to give the appearance of extra sewing and detail.
Regarding the interior of this book, the paper in this volume is heavy and, in a way, appealing to turn. There are also seventeen steel-engraved illustrations throughout this book. The images are on slightly heavier paper and have tissue guards. On some of the tissue guards (which may make you think that something ugly and unnecessary was added) ink visibly transferred to the paper, thus demonstrating the actual purpose of the tissue. This book contains rather interesting historical information about women from around the world, as well as their likenesses rendered in illustrations.
