Description

[Both books are the same]:
These books are covered with brown embossed calico-texture cloth. The backs are plain. Part of the decoration wraps from the front onto the spine of two lines along the edges at both the top and bottom of the covers. On the front a set of three lines separates the title from the rest of the cover and two lines continue onto the spine that acts as a divider for the title that is back-filled with green paint. The author at the bottom of the front cover is treated the same, only the third line blossoms into a leafy branch in the middle of the front cover and on the spine as well. Part of the leafy branch on the spine has been back filled in more green paint. Additionally on the spine are lines in green or black to separate the author from an additional green and black geometric pattern, and at the very bottom is the publisher's symbol. These covers are a nod to book design of the 1870s.
This book is made of wood pulp paper that is darkening to the point that soon the edges of the pages will be brittle and flake easily. The glossy paper frontispiece that looks like a wood engraving is the only illustration in the book. The vignette on the title page is actually the publisher's symbol/device.
________________________________________
Louisa May Alcott is an American novelist who wrote for adults and children. Her most famous book was written for children, Little Women. Her father had difficulty providing for his family so Alcott began working a variety of jobs at a young age to supplement the family income. She even turned her hand to nursing and volunteered for the Union. When she contracted typhoid and was sent home, her published letters about being a war nurse were published in 1863 and brought fame.
Little Women was serialized in Atlantic Monthly between 1868 and 1869. Several more books followed with the characters from this story. These two volumes are separate, but like the books making up the universe of the Little Women characters, these two are about the same people.
Alcott lived from 1832-1888.
