Description

These coarse terracotta covers are a linen-texture cloth. The paper onlay is a relief lithograph that also appears inside. The onlay is surrounded by a double gilt stamped border. One border is around the image and the other is around the edge of the book. Above the onlay is the title gilt stamped. The spine is plain with just the title, author's name, and the publisher's name gilt stamped. The back cover is plain.
The endpapers are plain, but the entirety of the rest of the textblock was printed on glossy wood pulp paper.
Each section has a heavy floral border round the title information, while the border around the title information on the title page is a geometric pattern instead of floral. Small floral black-and-white vignettes are scattered throughout the book. All the full-page illustrations look like plates, but they are not. Smaller illustrations are either black-and-white or color. These are lithographs - same as the onlay - and although the frontispiece looks like a photograph of the author, it too is a relief lithograph.
___________________________________________
Dinah Maria Mulock Craik was an English novelist. A believer in traditional gender roles, her experiences and her writings mirrored the reality that the ideal life did not usually happen. She was born into a tumultuous relationship and was eventually mutually separated from her father who had barely provided earlier in her life anyhow. After the death of her mother, Craik started writing to support her younger brothers. At different times she also gave her father financial support and her income supplemented that of her husband, who had been severely injured prior to their marriage. Their adoption of an abandonded baby shocked society.
Craik lived from 1826-1887.
Milo Winter was an American children's book illustrator. He did such famous book illustrations as Aesop's Fables and Alice in Wonderland.
Winter lived from 1888-1956.
