Description
[Two copies of this book have been donated to us]:
The covers are made of green calico-texture cloth with a paper onlay on the front cover surrounded by five gilt stamped lines. On the spine is the name of the book and the illustrator within a gilt frame surrounding an area of green paint. The back is plain.
The endpapers are yellow with overlapping illustrations of different characters in bright colors. The back endpaper and some of the plates were double-printed giving them a hazy, moving texture, but the front endpaper and the rest of the plates were printed correctly.
The top edge of the textblock has been painted green, but the foredge and bottom are plain. The textblock is printed on wood pulp paper.
The line illustrations included throughout the text are either a full-page or a half-page illustration and look most like wood engravings. The color illustrations are printed on thicker, whiter paper and are plates as relief lithographs.
