_____________________________________________
Tan cloth covers that look like calico upon which in teal is printed a repeating floral pattern with a rabbit holding a carrot in the center of the covers. The back is a mirror image of the front cover. The spine is plain with just the title, author's name, and the publisher printed in teal.
The endpapers are a map of 'The Hill.' The homes for people and animals are included on this map. The printing is soft and warm and looks like chalk lithography.
All the paper is wood pulp paper, but the paper is soft, and this is better quality paper than most books printed at this time when war rationing means 1940s-1960s paper is some of the worst ever produced. There is practically no deterioration of the paper.
Half-page or chalk lithographic vignette illustrations are sprinkled throughout the book. Each chapter starts with a raised capital, and the print was pressed so deeply into the paper that the lettering can be seen on the backside of each leaf.
Robert Lawson not only wrote, but illustrated this book, both the binding and many if not all of the illustrations include his signature, a separated R and L.
