Transcription of event description:
OLIVER CROMWELL | THOMAS CARLYLE | BOSTON: JAMES R. OSGOOD & CO. | 1877
This biography by Thomas Carlyle features green cloth covers in the Eastlake style with a black floral design stamped on the covers. The center design features the printer’s imprint. The title and author’s name are in gold leaf. The lower cover has a thistle motif in the center and a border, both blind stamped. The spine has darkened, and features the title, author’s name, and a continuation of the floral pattern, all stamped in black. The corners of this book have been bumped and rubbed, exposing the boards, and the headcap is missing.
Inside, the endpapers double as advertisements for other books in the Vest-Pocket Series. The frontispiece features what looks like a copper plate engraving of Oliver Cromwell. Each chapter begins with an ornately decorated raised capital. The book begins and ends with a floral vignette, and also features a vignette at the beginning of the first chapter. There are no other illustrations in the book.
Thomas Carlyle originally wrote this book to change the perception of Oliver Cromwell. First published in 1845, Carlyle sought to present a positive image of Cromwell, as well as many other historic figures, by writing about what he thought of as “heroic leadership throughout history.” This edition was published only a few years before Carlyle’s death in 1881.
