Transcription of event description:
THE JERUSALEM BIBLE | SALVADOR DALI, ILLUS. | GARDEN CITY, NY: DOUBLEDAY & CO. | 1970
The Jerusalem Bible features cloth covers that have been painted to resemble white leather. In the center of both the front and back covers, there is a sword-cross stamped in gold. The spine features the title in gilt, as well as a gold stamped Crusaders cross about halfway down the spine. The covers are padded, and the gold-tinted white paint appears to be cracking, which gives the covers a crackled effect. All edges are gilt (A.E.G.), and the endpapers are a beautifully simple unidentifiable white and red marbled pattern. There are two red satin ribbons that was woven on gold thread that can be used as bookmarks. They are disintegrating.
The title page is rather plain, except for the black and white image of the Crusaders cross printed in the center of the page. The interesting thing about this book is that the facsimile of paintings by famous artist Salvador Dali were reproduced on a lithographic machine. These fascinating prints are scattered throughout the book, and are meant to depict scenes from the Bible. Each painting is printed on matte card-stock, and features the verse they are meant to depict on the back. This book also contains maps and a family register at the end of the book on glossy paper.
This book was donated to Special Collections by Monica Harty in 2018.
