TEACHINGS OF SWAMI VIVEKANANDA | CALCUTTA: ADVAITA ASHRAMA | 1971 | 5TH EDITION
This book features a dust jacket over tan paper covers. The dust jacket is a tan color and features a distinct symbol of an orange sun in the upper left corner above the brown text of the title. In many Indian (Hindu) religious teachings and traditions, the symbolism of the sun is intricately tied to cycles of creation and rebirth. In the lower left-hand corner of the dust jacket there is a rectangular orange symbol, which is the mark of the original owner. The effect of this dust jacket is rather straightforward - the reader does not focus on the beauty of the book, but rather on the content. Minimalist design can be a beautiful aesthetic. The simple color scheme assists with the minimal tone. Because the other books in our collection from India are this simple, could unfussy covers mean that in India, the content is what is meaningful in books, and the artistic value is a secondary concern?
The covers of the book feature gilt stamping over mottled red and gray covers with the title, publisher, and symbol seen on the front cover of the dust jacket. The spine and back of the binding are completely plain. The small symbol on the cover illustrates a sunset behind a swan/bird and other vegetal features, all encompassed in the body of a hissing cobra. Unfortunately, the text is printed in English, not in an Indian alphabet, which would have added an extra layer of beauty.
Teachings… is one of 3,000 volumes donated by Mrs. Marifrances Engelhardt after Hurricane Matthew (2016) flooded her home. About 240 books are in Special Collections. During WWII she served in Spain in the diplomatic corps and married a well-known foreign correspondent, through whom she met Ernest Hemingway and Orson Wells. Sometime after her second marriage she settled in St. Augustine. When shown a book from her collection, despite her advanced years, she remembered who in her family owned it or gave it to her, and whether or not she enjoyed reading it. Mrs. Engelhardt died on April 18, 2017.
The original owner’s name, Daniel Pfeifer, who wrote the gift inscription, was the brother of Mrs. Engelhardt. He lived in the Far East as an English teacher for a number of years and this book, the Indian printed books, and Japanese printed books all came from him.
