Transcription of event description:
SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT | KEITH HARRISON AND VIRGIL BURNETT | LONDON: FOLIO SOCIETY | 1983
The exterior of this book features a lovely green color, which is an obvious reflection of the title. The cover also features a shield symbol stamped in a brown leather onlay. The illustrations on the endpapers and throughout the textblock are printed representations of the scenes and characters described in the text. The illustrations are on a beige background with only black and white shading and details. The black shading appears to be a combination of steel-plate engraved cross-hatching and painstakingly stippling (shading with individual dots) techniques, while the white shading are simple blocks. Overall, these illustrations are fine pieces even on their own, and their relevance to the text only enhances their impact.
The Folio Society published this book. They are a famous London-based publisher of classic hardback volumes founded by Charles Ede in 1947. Editions created by this publishing company feature carefully designed bindings and artist-commissioned illustrations. In recent years, several artistic elements of historic bindings have been incorporated into the binding design, thus explaining the use of leather onlay loosing imitating an armorial on a volume produced in the 1980s.
