BESTIARY… |RICHARD BARBER, TRANS. AND INTRO. | LONDON: THE FOLIO SOCIETY | 1992 | 1ST EDITION
The onlay found on the cover and in the illustrations inside are facsimiles from illuminated manuscripts. Ink jet printing was in use by the 1990s and shares the same technique of color application to paper as lithographs – dots of color. The difference between a lithograph and an ink jet printer though is in the color; ink jet only prints in magenta, cyan, black, and yellow. These facsimiles come from are the illuminated manuscript Physiologus, produced between 1220 and 1250 A.D. The text of this book interprets the symbolism of the illuminated manuscript’s illustrations in order to better analyze the medieval teachings found in bestiaries. These images certainly appeal to people interested in this art format and historical artwork in general. Additionally, this volume is stored in a slipcase. In a way, pulling a book from a slipcase can be like “uncovering history.”
Bestiary… is one of 3,000 volumes donated by Mrs. Marifrances Engelhardt after Hurricane Matthew (2016) flooded her home. About 240 books are in Special Collections. During WWII she served in Spain in the diplomatic corps and married a well-known foreign correspondent, through whom she met Ernest Hemingway and Orson Wells. Sometime after her second marriage she settled in St. Augustine. When shown a book from her collection, despite her advanced years, she remembered who in her family owned it or gave it to her, and whether or not she enjoyed reading it. Mrs. Engelhardt died on April 18, 2017.
