THE WOOD-PILE | ROBERT FROST | NEW YORK: THE SPIRAL PRESS | 1961
The beauty of this miniature book lies not only in the lovely wood engraved illustration of bare trees in a snowy field on the front cover, but also in its unique purpose. The engraver of these illustrations is accredited on the back cover, and was Thomas W. Nason.
Essentially, this book was used as a Christmas greeting card. You can see the To and From statements inscribed on the title page as well as a printed greeting. A short-lived trend in the mid-20th century was sending booklets like this one as greeting cards and gifts. The illustrations certainly add to the text, and the small size makes it quite adorable and easy to hold in the palm of your hand. The cover also features slight tonal variations and texture which add an additional depth.
The Wood-Pile is one of 3,000 volumes donated by Mrs. Marifrances Engelhardt after Hurricane Matthew (2016) flooded her home. About 240 books are in Special Collections. During WWII she served in Spain in the diplomatic corps and married a well-known foreign correspondent, through whom she met Ernest Hemingway and Orson Wells. Sometime after her second marriage she settled in St. Augustine. When shown a book from her collection, despite her advanced years, she remembered who in her family owned it or gave it to her, and whether or not she enjoyed reading it. Mrs. Engelhardt died on April 18, 2017.
