FAIRY TALES | HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN | NEW YORK: THE ORION PRESS | 1958
This book of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales features cloth covers that are off- white/tan in color, and have an image of a little girl in yellow and red, with gold leaf hair walking away from the viewer on the front cover. The spine includes the title, publisher, and author’s name, all in red with blue and gilt lines, and the same girl on the front cover. The girl and the lines all resemble children’s illustrations, which mirror what is found inside. The top edge is painted bright red, while the other edges are plain.
The book contains the various fairy tales written by Hans Christian Andersen, including such famous tales as, “The Little Mermaid,” “The Snow Queen,” and “The Little Match Girl.” The illustrations in this book are children’s drawings of how they imagine the stories. These drawings are by children from around the world. The drawings are printed on the same paper as the text, and range from a single page to a two-page spread. When transferred from the drawings of the children into the book, they were reproduced as lithographs.
Andersen’s Fairy Tales is one of 3,000 volumes donated by Mrs. Marifrances Engelhardt after Hurricane Matthew (2016) flooded her home. About 240 books are in Special Collections. During WWII she served in Spain in the diplomatic corps and married a well-known foreign correspondent, through whom she met Ernest Hemingway and Orson Wells. Sometime after her second marriage she settled in St. Augustine. When shown a book from her collection, despite her advanced years, she remembered who in her family owned it or gave it to her, and whether or not she enjoyed reading it. Mrs. Engelhardt died on April 18, 2017.
