THE RAVEN AND THE BELLS | EDGAR ALLAN POE | NEW YORK: THOMAS Y. CROWELL & CO. | 1917
This Edgar Allan Poe book is covered by a single thick piece of leather that is either suede or reverse calf - both types are soft to the touch as seen here. “The Raven” is stamped in gold on the front cover in the upper left-hand corner. The bottom cover is plain. Because of the solid but limp nature of the covers, this book resembles a journal, and features uncut edges on the fore-edge and bottom, while the top is gilt. The endpapers are a green and brown floral pattern that looks like block-printed paper.
“The Raven” was written by Poe in 1845. When read out loud, he aimed for a methodic and musical sound. “The Bells” is believed to have been written by Poe in 1848, and was published posthumously in November of 1849. “The Bells” is known for its use of onomatopoeia (the formation of a word from a sound that is associated with what it describes) and the darkening tone it possesses as the poem progresses.
This book was donated to Special Collections by William A. Blattner in 2015.
