THE HUMMING BIRD, A CHRISTMAS AND NEW-YEAR'S GIFT | IDA MAITLAND | NEW YORK: LEAVITT & ALLEN | 1859
The covers of this book are a soft brown leather. They are stamped deeply with two plain borders and a floral scroll frame. This design surrounds a narrow blank area that helps focus attention on the heavily ornate gold oval surrounding the title. The oval has lines, dots, and floral scrolling - all in gold - with hints of blue paint showing from under the gilt. The front and back covers are the same. The spine has gilt flowers stamped along its length, as well as a gilt panel with the title inside. All of the edges are gilt (A.E.G.). The endpapers are a plain coated paper that is a yellow-tan color.
There are illustrations throughout the book, with each one depicting children. Each image is titled, and the title is written under the image. The frontispiece is one of the most attractive illustrations, depicting a young girl feeding leaves to a gazelle. This image faces the decorative title page, which features a girl holding a kitten. The text throughout the book is surrounded by double line borders, with a fleur-de-lis in each corner. Both the headcap and the tailcap are gone, revealing the paper waste used by the binder to pad the boards when making the covers. There is red rotting up and down the spine, as well as along the edges. Sadly, there are also ink stains on the front and back covers.
The Humming Bird is one of 3,000 volumes donated by Mrs. Marifrances Engelhardt after Hurricane Matthew (2016) flooded her home. About 240 books are in Special Collections. During WWII she served in Spain in the diplomatic corps and married a well-known foreign correspondent, through whom she met Ernest Hemingway and Orson Wells. Sometime after her second marriage she settled in St. Augustine. When shown a book from her collection, despite her advanced years, she remembered who in her family owned it or gave it to her, and whether or not she enjoyed reading it. Mrs. Engelhardt died on April 18, 2017.
