Transcript of event description:
THE POETICAL WORKS OF SIR WALTER SCOTT | SIR WALTER SCOTT | BOSTON: PHILLIPS, SAMPSON, & CO. | 1852
The covers of this book feature bright red cloth with five blind stamped line borders. Inside the borders is an elaborate floral scroll bordering the gilt stamped centerpiece - a lyre with tree fronds. The spine is heavily embellished, with floral scrolling in gold. The title of the book is also stamped in gold on the spine. The covers show a respectable amount of shelf-wear, but not enough to detract from the overall appearance. The frontispiece features a steel-plate engraved portrait of Sir Walter Scott; however, it is badly foxed. Double black lines form borders around the text on all the pages of this book.
Sir Walter Scott is one of Scotland’s most famous authors. He was born in the 18th century, and he wrote books and poems into the early decades of the 19th century, including the Waverley Novels, Ivanhoe, and “The Lady of the Lake.” His writing brought nationalist feeling to Scotland after a half-century of extreme subjugation by the English, who became fascinated with the “old” Scotland. Scott was instrumental in bringing King George III to Scotland who created a scandal by wearing a too-short kilt that revealed too much leg, but began the British Royal Family’s love affair with the tartan!
